What Changes Along a Coastline Between Two Surveys
Twice a year, our team returns to the same nine coastal markers near Bonny to repeat measurements taken the season before. The value of this work has little to do with any single visit; it comes entirely from the comparison.
A shoreline is not static under ordinary conditions. Tides shift sediment, storms rearrange sandbars, and mangrove roots hold ground in some seasons more than others. Our sampling notes record the collection method and tide state each time, so a later comparison isn't comparing a low-tide reading against a high-tide one by accident.
Two seasons, one marker
At marker CZ-07, near a stretch of mangrove that has drawn community concern, dissolved oxygen readings held roughly steady between the two most recent surveys, while salinity shifted modestly with the season. Nothing about that pattern, on its own, points to an incident. It points to normal seasonal variation, which is exactly the kind of finding that responsible reporting has to be willing to state.

- Two markers showed readings outside their typical range, flagged for a follow-up visit
- All nine markers were sampled within a five-day window to limit weather variability
Why the gap matters more than either number
A single coastal reading, read in isolation, tells a reader almost nothing about direction or trend. It is the second measurement — collected the same way, at the same point, months later — that turns a number into information. That is why our comparison panels always show both readings side by side, with the guideline source named for context.
Two of the nine markers this season warrant a closer look before the next scheduled survey, and we've noted that in the published record rather than waiting for the next cycle to raise it.
